Uterine Fibroid Embolization

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. They can be as small as an apple seed or as large as a cantaloupe. Though rarely cancerous, they can be painful and difficult to live with. Symptoms include heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure or pain, and frequent urination.

Treating Uterine Fibroids

Fortunately, advances in medical science provide women with multiple treatment options, including a highly effective, minimally invasive treatment called uterine fibroid embolization. Embolization is effective in over 90% of appropriately selected cases without the down time and side effects that come with other treatments such as hysterectomy.

During the procedure a tiny nick is made near the groin and a small tube (catheter) is inserted into the femoral artery. Using high resolution real-time imaging, the catheter is guided to the artery that feeds the uterine fibroid. Particles, the size of a grain of sand, are then injected into the artery blocking the fibroid’s blood supply. As a result, the uterine fibroid shrinks and eventually disappears.
